Our Austria women's cup run comes to an end in the round of 16 of the ÖFB Frauen Cup. Against reigning Austrian champions and title holders FK Austria Wien, head coach Robert Micheu's side had to settle for a 0-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the Wörthersee Stadion. The Champions League participants from Vienna lived up to their favourites tag and came out on top against our Violets.
For our team, the clash with the Austrian champions was a special challenge. The Viennese dictated proceedings for long spells and repeatedly posed difficult questions to the Klagenfurt defence. Our women tried to hold their own and close down the spaces as best they could.
Goalkeeper Stephanie Gräber in particular caught the eye on several occasions. Among other things, she prevented another goal with a strong save in the 56th minute. The favourites remained dangerous after that too. In the 75th minute, a Viennese header came back off the crossbar.
In the end, the individual class and technical quality of the top-flight side proved decisive. That brings an end to the cup journey for our Austria women, which had begun with a convincing 4-0 away win against SG Geretsberg/Bürmoos.
Despite the exit, the meeting with a club competing at international level was a valuable experience for our team. The support of the Austria fans, who created a great atmosphere at the Wörthersee Stadion, also made this cup afternoon a special occasion.
The focus now returns to the 2. Frauen Bundesliga, where our Austria sit second in the table and want to build on their recent performances.
